Millbrae, CA: On May 3, the Millbrae Education Foundation is holding a city-wide event in support of their public school system. MEF marks its second year participating in Silicon Valley Gives (a 24-hour regional day of giving connects nonprofits to grants and prize money) with Millbrae Night Out.
A chance to bring the entire school district and city together, Millbrae Night Out takes place from 11am-11pm at nine businesses around Millbrae. Participating businesses will give a portion of their day’s sale to MEF when the customer presents a voucher, available at MillbraeKids.org and at the evening’s central hub at Bacchus Wine Shop (Hillcrest at Broadway).
In addition, MEF is asking that all district families who have not made their full annual donation do so on May 3. Community members, extended family, and others who want to make a positive impact for 2,700 public school students can also contribute at least $10 to help the district win bonus money for having the highest number of individual donors. MEF won $10,000 last year in that category by just a handful of donors, and more money is available this year through Silicon Valley Gives.
“Absolutely every donation made to us on May 3 makes a significant difference, as we strive to reach our $400,000 fiscal-year goal for improved education district-wide,” said Christine Taylor, Millbrae Education Foundation President.
“Underfunding is a vital issue for the Millbrae School District in particular. The increasing cost of living does not translate into more money for our district, and we remain grossly underfunded even by California standards. The average annual per-student expenditure in the United States is $11,841; the average in California is $8,339; and for our own district it is a shockingly low $6,462,” said Taylor. “That’s not an adequate amount in the 21st century, and strong participation on May 3 will make a tangible difference to our students’ education in 2016-17.”
Donations made through MillbraeKids.org from midnight-11:59pm on Tuesday, May 3, count for Silicon Valley Gives matching grants and prize money. Millbrae Night Out vouchers and list of participating business are available at MillbraeKids.org.
Millbrae Education Foundation is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit directly funding programs for students TK-8 in five public schools.

A few of our schools’ newsletters have announced our annual Barnes & Noble Book Fair, as we have been holding this event for several years. However, this year, MEF is not holding the B&N book fair. There are 3 primary reasons for the change:
PTAs each have book fairs and we don’t wish to overlap — we’re all on the same team;
B&N Book Fair raises only about 0.5% of MEF’s annual budget with a huge amount of volunteer time; and
MEF is committed to reducing district-wide fundraising fatigue with just 2 fundraisers for 2015-16 (our hugely successful Walk-a-Thon/Donation Days which took place on October 4, and the upcoming MEF Night Out/Silicon Valley Gives event on May 3, 2016).
MEF hopes to provide our music students with a public city-based performance opportunity at MEF Night Out/Silicon Valley Gives on May 3. In the meantime, please support your PTA’s book fair, or shop online with Amazon using our link to help fund music & technology in our 5 schools!
